Make a Plan
Maintain access to official announcements to help you make the best decisions for you and your family. Purchase a battery/weather radio in case of a power outage. Designate an out-of-state contact who can relay messages between you and other family members in the disaster area in case local phone lines are jammed. Text messages are the best way to communicate.
SHELTER IN PLACE
“Sheltering in Place” means staying where you are and waiting for the emergency to pass. You may choose to shelter in place during a storm (if you weren’t ordered to evacuate). Close all doors and windows, find an interior room to stay in, make sure you have enough supplies to last at least seven days, and listen to the radio or TV to find out when it’s safe to exit your building.

RESOURCES FOR SENIORS, PETS AND SPECIAL NEEDS
Pets displaced by a disaster are frequently kept in shelters and by other local organizations. If you are trying to locate pets lost as a result of a disaster, contact your local or State emergency management agency. Please keep in mind that it may be difficult, if not impossible, to find shelter for your animals during and after a disaster, so plan ahead. LEARN MORE
